Deleted Scenes
Jun. 1st, 2018 07:05 pmI was doing some canonical housecleaning and remembering how the extended material contributes to my love of Jurisdiction and Stildyne in particular. The author kindly includes on her website a list of scenes that she wrote and then edited out of her books-- some still fit in canon continuity, some don't. They're all here, but please be careful; they aren't summarized and they don't have warnings-- and they're from books that deal very heavily with the psychological effects of torture.
I decided to summarize, categorize, and link below-- mostly for my own benefit but have at if you don't mind a lack of context! Most of them I take as head-canon, but the ones that don't fit I'll just buy as AUs, and I still pull from the characterization and hints of day to day life in them.
Have also taken this opportunity to TL:DR about some of the characters Stildyne knows or knew at that point in his life.
For visual aid, a quick rundown of significant characters
CAPTAIN - Griers Lowden. Tall-ish older man (6'4ish?), gray haired, mustache. Genially corrupt sociopath.
FIRST OFFICER - Ralph Mendez. Competent and decent. Idiom and canonical description of home planet sort of invoke an earnest Mexican cowboy.
INTELLIGENCE OFFICER - Two. A giant bat. Eats nonsentient hominids when she's at home. Very sharp teeth, soft fur. Lots of grandkids. Her ultrasonic-to-standard translator is stuck at 'perky'.
CHIEF ENGINEERING OFFICER - Serge of Wheatfields. A very tall (noticeably over seven feet) man with a thick neck, otherwise thin and wiry. Hates inquisitors. Emotionally mangled.
CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER (INQUISITOR) - Andrej Koscuisko. Blond. Short and small framed. Icy blue eyes.Russian Dolgorukij accent. Not currently very sane.
HEAD OF SECURITY - Brachi Stildyne. The dude whose journal you are in, but two years younger. Still refusing to admit he gives a damn, while giving a damn. Taller than anyone but Wheatfields. Middle-aged, gray in his hair. Face like he made out with a lawnmower blade.
BONDS - Bond involuntaries are any criminals who are (A) convicted of breach of security, treason, or being Nurail, and (B) the right physical type for security. They are put through brutal mental conditioning and then implanted with a Governor chip, wired to send pain impulses when it senses insubordination. The bond was put into place so that Inquisitors would have helping hands who can't complain about what they see. The Bond, like Inquisition, is about 40 years old.
BOND - Robert St. Clare - tallish, fit, dark hair and blue eyes, young and notably handsome. Long history with Koscuisko (who gave up a lot to save his life once).Irish Nurail accent.
BOND - Lek Kerenko - tallish, fit, blond-brown hair and dark eyes. Older than Robert, has been put through a lot more hell as a bond involuntary.Polish Sarvaw accent, mostly trained out of him by now.
BOND - Pyotr Micmac - tallish, muscular and lined, skin nearly black, deep voice. Middle-aged. Has been a bond longer than any of the others aboard. Experienced. Would be Head of Security instead of Stildyne if it weren't for the whole government slave thing.
THE ROOKIE COMMAND LIEUTENANT - Jennet Ap Rhiannon. Young. Short. Dark hair. She's creche, which effectively means that she's a little collectivist with the Bench as her Big Brother. (She never loses this mentality although she goes interestingly off the reservation in later books, in a fairly logical-badass way.)
These exerpts occur before Stildyne's full canonical redemption but the hints of him not being the complete asshole he likes to think he is are there. These exerpts are mostly about the ship's inquisitor, Andrej Koscuisko, but what can you do about it. It's like he's the protagonist or something.
